hey everyone, i recently bought a used 88 Bronco II after having bought a new one back in 88 but sold it for an areostar because my wife wanted one. I liked it so much i bought another one. I am doing alot of work to the BII this summer and have done alot already...but i cant get the darn touch 4 wheel drive to work. At night you can see that the 4x4 and the Low Range light is dimly on but after pressing it, it does nothing and stays in 2 - wheel drive. If anyone has had this problem in the past or has any suggestions please help.

I would like to get on the trails soon.[/b]

First of all, did you have a leaky roof or windshiled seal, if so, water could have gotten up there and is preventing it from working. This happened to me when I bought my BII, it had a leaky windshield seal and water got in there every time it rained (and on me), so I was mad that it didn't work. Then I was offroading in 2wd and hit a tree and destroyed the windsheild, which had to be replaced. The guys at the shop said there was a lot of water in there and used a compressor and air gun to blow out the water and dry it off and assured me that it would work again, and sure enough it did. Try that, I know that getting the windshield off is a PITA, but if you have a bad seal, that needs to be fixed. Otherwise, pry the reading lights out to access the screws and take the shift console off the roof so you can see whats wrong with it. Also, check the chilton's manual for the procedeure, but there's an ECM test you can do to check if there's anything wrong. It involves a button and a flashing LED and its under the dash panel on the passenger side, on the top of the dash on the pass side, there is an access panel that unscrews. Also press the button and jump out a listen for the motor on the t-case to see if it works or makes strange noises. Good luck.

pull the electronic shift motor out. Once you have it pulled, you will need to open it up and do a thorough cleaning. I had the same problem and now it works excellent. Here is a link which breaks it down for you ....

http://www.therangerstation.com/tech_li ... tmotor.htm

Be careful though .... I tried to open the blue cap and snapped off one of the bolts, so I left it alone. I did everything else and it works. A buddy of mine did the same thing ... snapped one of the bolts for the blue cover and he too left that alone and did everything else.

I think the main issue with these, is the amount of crud that builds up on the brass and there is no longer any contact. Clean it up and you will be 4 wheeling in no time ... 1 hour tops.

so with the toggle you just put it in 4H then flick the switch for 4L? so both are activated? or does it work one at a time? i really like this idea... are they mounted on the headliner in stock or on your dash?

WELL mines located on the dash were the lighter is and theres a hole drilled were i mounted it but it works if you holf it to the ledt it goes to 4h then if you hold it again it goes to 4l then when you hold it to the right it goes back to 4h then hold it again to get it back to 2h and put it in reverse and roll back a foot and it unlocks the hubs

so you have one switch? could you do two switches, one for 4H and one for 4L cuz i think that would be more efficient for my liking...
